social parking

Fragiskos Antimisiaris is one of the two young participants in
the show from the New Jersey School of Architecture.
Throughout his education Antimisiaris has approached his
projects with an open mind and inquisitive process.
The project exhibited here, entitled "Social Parking", is a merging
of two conditions, commuter parking and community green space.
"A parking space transformed into a refined object - in new
meaning or symbolic content."
When Social Parking was brought to a random street parking spot
in Manhattan for a day, the juxtaposition of park space in a parking
space was dramatic. Acting on the most minimal of architectural
moves, simply altering the nature of a space, it created a maximal
range of possibilities.
A native of the Greek island of Karpathos, Antimisiaris is from a
place where "nature" is not a separate entity from everyday life. It
is a stark contrast to the suburban sprawl and metropolitan
congestion that this project addresses.
